Purchases and Billing
All purchases are processed by Apple. We do not receive your payment details. For charges, receipts, refunds, or purchase history, contact Apple Support (https://support.apple.com/billing) or visit https://reportaproblem.apple.com; Apple decides refunds. Prices are the ones Apple shows you before purchase.
What you can buy depends on your App version
To see the version installed on your iPhone, open Settings → About Talefall in the App.
- App version 1.3.2 and later. The player and the reader — listening, reading, Apple voices, on-device transcription, read-along, imports and the catalogs — need no purchase, trial, or subscription. The only purchase offered is the Talefall Subscription. Without a subscription you can also order the first book on us (below).
- Earlier versions (1.3.1 and before). They work as they did until you update: they offer a 3-day trial of the player, with no automatic charge when it ends; after the trial, listening and reading need the one-time player purchase or an active subscription, and subscribers can buy 5 extra hours. Earlier versions may keep offering these products until we withdraw them from sale. Once version 1.3.2 is available on the App Store, you can update to use the player without any purchase (Terms of Use, Section 3).
- Earlier purchases are honoured. A one-time player purchase stays yours and is not taken away. Extra hours keep the rules below.
In every version, your library, your book orders, and Export to Files stay available without a purchase or a subscription.
First book on us (App version 1.3.2 and later)
If you have no active subscription, you can order one AI-generated book of about 15 minutes at no charge, once per Apple Account (Terms of Use, Section 4.0). While the offer is available, the screen for creating a book shows “Your first book (≈15 min) is on us”. If you believe you qualify but the App does not show the offer, write to contact@ownplace.net.
- The rules of a paid order apply: you must be 18 or older, accept the Terms of Use and the AI-provider permission, write fiction with no real personal data, and be physically located in a Supported Territory. The length is fixed.
- Once per Apple Account. To check this, the App sends Apple’s signed record of your download of the App (Privacy Policy, Section 6.1A). Reinstalling the App does not give a second book.
- Daily limit. The number of first books we give each day is limited for everyone. When the day’s limit is reached, nothing is charged and your idea is kept; try again later.
- If it does not reach you — it fails, expires, is stopped by our checks, or you cancel or delete it before every chapter is delivered — you can order it again, up to three orders in total. Once a first book has been delivered, the offer is used. If a delivered book cannot be played or is materially not what you ordered, write to us with the book number shown in the App; after checking, we give the offer back (Terms of Use, Section 4.2).
- It has no cash value, cannot be transferred, uses no hours, and does not start a subscription or authorize any charge. We may change or end the offer for orders not yet placed.
Talefall Subscription
The monthly auto-renewable subscription unlocks Book from an Idea and narration of your own texts in the Talefall voice (both in the Create tab). In versions before 1.3.2 it also includes the player while it is active.
- Hours. Each month includes 5 hours of new audio. Listening never uses hours. Hours are deducted after narration for the actual length of the finished audio, never more than your balance. If an order ends with any chapter undelivered under Section 4.2 of the Terms of Use, all hours reserved or charged for the order are restored automatically. If every chapter was delivered, cancellation alone restores no hours. Unused monthly hours expire at renewal.
- Extra hours. App version 1.3.2 and later does not sell extra-hours packs; earlier versions may offer 5 extra hours to subscribers until we withdraw the product from sale. Extra hours, whenever bought, are used after the monthly hours, do not expire at renewal, and need an active subscription to be used. If a purchase is not credited within 24 hours after the App reaches our server with an active subscription, write to us (Terms of Use, Section 4.3).
- Book length: 15 minutes to 5 hours.
- Where it is available: only in the Supported Territories; the same applies to the first book on us. The App is not distributed in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland.
- Cancel: iOS Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions → Talefall. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period. Books already on your phone stay there and can be exported. In version 1.3.2 and later you keep listening and reading without a subscription; in earlier versions, listening and reading then need the player purchase.
- Subscription expiry and existing orders. A book ordered and paid for with hours while your subscription was active remains available for delivery after the subscription expires, provided the subscription has not been refunded or revoked. You can still view the order list, download the book, confirm delivery, and delete or cancel the order using the same subscription. Expiry alone does not cancel the order or restore its hours. New orders and new requests that use hours require an active subscription. The existing seven-day delivery deadline and the rules for deletion and restoration of hours continue to apply; expiry does not restart that deadline.
Restore Purchases
Sign in with the same Apple Account you used to buy, then use Restore Purchases in the App. It restores the subscription and, if you bought it earlier, the one-time player purchase. If a completed purchase is still not recognized, write to contact@ownplace.net.
Creating a Book: How It Works
-
Before You Create. The first time — for a paid order or for the first book on us — the App asks you to confirm that you are 18 or older and accept the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
-
Permission. Before your first book order the App asks permission to send your ideas, book settings, and working text to an AI provider to write your books. In App version 1.3.1 and later, in plain words, the AI-provider permission (permission version 2026-10-14.1) means:
- your content goes to OpenAI (OpenAI OpCo, LLC), which we use directly through the OpenAI API under our own contract and data processing addendum with OpenAI — not through OpenRouter or another AI gateway; OpenAI may process it through its published affiliates and subprocessors, and our hosting provider Modal also processes order content;
- no model training, no sale, no advertising; it is used only for the requested service, support, security, abuse prevention and legal compliance;
- OpenAI may keep requests for up to 30 days to provide the service and detect abuse, and longer only where the law requires or to protect against harm; there is no single maximum;
- processing and access by authorized OpenAI staff or contractors may occur in several countries; we do not choose China or another country of concern under U.S. law; OpenAI’s published information names none of them, but it is not a complete list of processing locations;
- the OpenAI model may change within these conditions; another AI provider, a gateway, or broader purposes, retention or human access needs your new permission;
- fiction only: do not enter real personal or health information.
The screen names one AI provider: OpenAI (OpenAI OpCo, LLC), directly. Right now: books under permission 2026-10-14.1 are written by the GPT-6.1 Sol model in the OpenAI API. The details, with countries, retention, caching, human access and disclosed exceptions, are in the Privacy Policy, Section 6.3 (“AI providers, countries & retention”), which also quotes the screen word for word. “Not Now” sends no order content to OpenAI. To withdraw, turn off “Sending ideas to create books” in Settings; this also stops AI processing of orders still in progress, and hours for unfinished orders are restored under Section 4.2 of the Terms of Use.
Earlier permissions and earlier versions of the App. If you answered an earlier version of this permission, App version 1.3.1 and later asks again before your next book order. Orders placed under an earlier permission are processed only as that permission promised, on its routes through OpenRouter. For example, App version 1.3 (permission 2026-10-08) sends book-writing requests only to the GLM model through OpenRouter, restricted to hosting providers that OpenRouter lists as zero data retention. OpenRouter’s separate processing and metadata-retention practices are described in Privacy Policy Sections 6.3.3–6.3.5.
-
Your idea. Choose a type (Story, Explainer, How-to), language, and length. Do not include personal data about real people, including yourself. Turn on “My idea contains no personal data about real people”; editing the idea turns it off again. Our server refuses ideas in which it finds personal or sensitive data and asks you to rewrite them; no hours are used.
-
Writing and narration. You can close the App. Each chapter is checked by our moderation model before it is narrated and delivered. The App downloads the book automatically.
If server narration fails, the server automatically retries up to three times within the same order. Failed attempts do not use additional hours; hours are charged for the actual duration of the successfully produced audio. If the order ends with any chapter undelivered, all hours for the order are restored (Terms of Use, Section 4.2).
“Book ready” notifications (optional). In App version 1.3.1 and later, when you place your first book order, the App offers to notify you when a book is ready or could not be finished, even while the App is closed, and explains what this involves before iOS asks for permission. Only if you allow notifications does the App send this iPhone’s push-notification token, with your signed subscription transaction (in version 1.3.2 and later, for 8 days after you order a first book on us, also or instead Apple’s signed record of your download), to our service on Modal (USA), which stores it linked to your subscription identifier and, for a book on us, to your app transaction identifier. Apple delivers the notification: we send Apple only the token and a standard book-status message, with no subscription or app transaction identifier and nothing from your book. In version 1.3.2 and later, when a book is ready we also send a silent signal containing only the kind “ready”, which lets iOS wake the App briefly to collect the book in the background. If you already allow Talefall notifications, the App shows this notice at your next book order and sends the token only after you tap “OK”. To stop, turn notifications off in iOS Settings → Notifications → Talefall; the next time the App is open, it asks us to delete the token. Ordering, collecting, and listening to books work without notifications. See the Privacy Policy, Section 5.
Narrate your own text. For a book created from your idea, the App reuses the confirmation given when you placed that order for narration of the resulting book; it does not ask you to confirm again. For another book without that confirmation, before its first narration in the Talefall voice you confirm “This text has no real person’s information.” In App version 1.3.1 and later, our server refuses texts for narration in which it detects personal or sensitive data. Narration in the Talefall voice goes to our own narrator on our service and uses hours. The on-device Apple voice works offline, never sends the text anywhere, and does not use hours.
Your copy and our server. As soon as the App confirms that it has saved every chapter, we delete our working server copy of the book and cannot deliver it again. Provider copies, content reports, and legally preserved materials follow the separate retention periods in Privacy Policy Sections 6.3–6.4. The App keeps the book on your device and, if iCloud is available and the save succeeds, in your private iCloud. Use Export to Files for your own backup. An order without that confirmation within seven days expires and is deleted at the next scheduled cleanup, normally within 15 minutes. If any chapter did not reach you, all hours for the order are restored; if every chapter reached you, cancelling, deleting, or expiry alone restores none (Terms of Use, Section 4.2).
Report content. Book menu → Report content. If sending fails, the App offers to email the report to contact@ownplace.net. Anyone can also report by email (“Talefall: content report”). See the AI Safety and Content Policy.
Generated content may be inaccurate. Do not rely on it for facts or as professional advice.
Privacy Requests
Settings → Privacy → Request data deletion, after you confirm, asks our service to delete the data it keeps for your subscription; books on your iPhone are not touched. In version 1.3.2 and later the request also carries Apple’s signed record of your download, so data kept for the first book on us is deleted too, and it works without a subscription. If the App cannot identify your subscription (in version 1.3.2 and later: neither your subscription nor your download of the App) or the request fails, the App offers to prepare an email to contact@ownplace.net with the identifiers it has (the subscription identifier and, in version 1.3.2 and later, the app transaction identifier). If the App shows “Almost done”, tap “Request data deletion” again in a few minutes to finish. What deletion covers, and which records are kept, is described in Section 10 of the Privacy Policy. You can also ask for access, correction, or deletion by email (“Talefall: privacy request”). See also the Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy.
Anonymous Usage Counters
On first launch the App asks whether it may send a few anonymous counters (for example, that the App opened or that an import failed); the default is no. You can change your answer any time in Settings → Privacy → “Send anonymous counters”. Counters contain no book titles, text, file names, or identifier of you or your device, and are deleted by scheduled cleanup after 90 days; cleanup normally runs every 15 minutes and retries failed deletions. See the Privacy Policy, Section 8.
Importing Audiobooks
From Files: import audio files or a ZIP from the Files app. MP3, M4A, M4B, AAC, and FLAC are supported; other formats are converted on the device. In version 1.3.2 and later you can also open MP3, M4B, and ZIP audiobooks from other apps with Open in Talefall.
Wi-Fi Upload: connect your iPhone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network, open Wi-Fi Upload in the App, open the shown address in your computer’s browser, and upload. The transfer uses plain HTTP on your local network: use it only on a trusted private network and turn the server off when done.
Free Catalogs
The built-in catalogs show works that LibriVox, the Internet Archive, and Project Gutenberg identify as public-domain or lawfully available. In version 1.3.2 and later, on the U.S. App Store, the My Books page also suggests a few public-domain classics read by LibriVox volunteers; remove any title or hide the shelf (Settings → “Show classics picks” brings it back). While the shelf is shown, the App loads its cover images from the Internet Archive.
Your Files and Backups
Your local library, bookmarks, and listening statistics stay on your device and in your own backups. We cannot restore deleted local content; keep backups of your original files. Content submitted to or generated by our service follows the retention rules described above and in the Privacy Policy.
